Getting it Right

civil-and-military-leaders-meet-at-ghq‘Extraordinary huddle’ said one headline. ‘First ever meeting of this kind’ said a TV anchor. They were referring to the GHQ (General Headquarters) convened meeting of the civil and military leadership chaired by the COAS (Chief of Army Staff) on June 8, 2016. The COAS was flanked by the Director General Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) and the Chief of General Staff (CGS) and other senior members of his staff. On the civilian side the Interior Minister and the National Security Adviser were conspicuous by their absence — the Finance Minister, the Defence Minister, the two Advisers to the Prime Minister (PM) and the Foreign Secretary were there. An ISPR (Inter Services Public Relations) statement stated that the meeting discussed regional peace, hostile intelligence agencies, Operation Zarb e Azb and Pakistan’s stability and prosperity. Analysts quoted ‘sources’ as saying that the threats to CPEC and other issues of concern especially foreign policy directions after the arrest of Indian and Afghan spies and the US Drone attack were also discussed. Whatever the agenda it was most certainly not a routine meeting — extraordinary circumstances warrant extraordinary measures — the idea being to maintain stability in the midst of turbulence.
