“Maybe there is a beast… maybe it’s only us.”

Golding’s novel, ‘Lord of the Flies’, may seemingly be a story about a
group of young boys stranded on an Island trying to maintain order by
establishing rules, but in reality is a socio-political commentary on
the importance of government and social institutions to ensure the
preservation of the social fabric in times of chaos. Golding’s message
seems to be that governments will only hold legitimacy if both parties
in the social contract- the government and the people- both adhere to a
basic set of rules and norms, and are concerned about the greater good
of the society.
