Looney Tunes

“Of course you know, this means war.” [Bugs Bunny]

The attack in Pulwama District in Indian occupied Kashmir left scores of security personal dead, in a deadly targeted suicide blast by a local from the Indian-administered Kashmir. The Jaish-e-Mohammad purportedly immediately claimed responsibility and there was furor in India fuelled by the hard-line stance adopted by the Modi Government. The Pulwama incident is a manifestation of the prolonged repressive military stance adopted by the Indians in Kashmir and an outcome of the years of the forced suppression of the Kashmiris. As usual India was quick to lay blame squarely on Pakistan. The irony in that the Indian claims appear to be almost farcical in the absence of objective reasoning based on a high level of convoluted imagination, lies and deceit. The government of Pakistan on the other hand adopted a balanced and conciliatory stance calling for an objective evaluation of the situation and offering to assist India and act on the basis of proof if provided by the Indians. A beleaguered and under-pressure Modi was quick to assert that the Pulwama incident would be avenged at all cost and that Pakistan would have to bear the consequences. In the famous words of the iconic Bugs Bunny “this means war”. The difference is that this is would be war between two nuclear-armed States. As rightly pointed out by Prime Minister Imran Khan, it would be a war that would not be in the control of either Pakistan or India.
