It is mind boggling that a mob was allowed to form after a permitted protest rally and that this mob was allowed to march over 20 kilometers to D Chawk in Islamabad in the forbidden high security Red Zone where they staged aDharna or Sit-in for four days before negotiations over their demands resolved the situation. While marching to Islamabad the mob carried out wanton destruction of public property. The merits and demerits of the demands aside the more important factor is the government’s response and the fact that much destruction of national assets and loss of face internationally took place. Were there other options available to the government?
